BEETHOVEN  Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor”
MUSSORGSKY  Pictures at an Exhibition

Massive in scale, symphonic in scope, Beethoven’s final piano concerto elevated the art form to dazzling new heights unsurpassed to this day. The extraordinary Olga Kern—the first woman in 30 years to win the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and an RPO audience favorite—performs this trailblazing titan of the repertoire, packed with power, poetry, and sheer beauty. “So personal, it’s like hearing Beethoven’s voice,” says Music Director Ward Stare. Plus, Stare conducts a unique and thrilling  performance of Mussorgsky’s beloved sonic showpiece, Pictures at an Exhibition, featuring orchestrations by nine notable arrangers including Ravel, Stokowski and Ashkenazy.

Join conductors and special guests for a free, fun, and lively discussion about the music before each Philharmonics Series concert. Talks start one hour before the concert and end with ample time for you to refresh before the concert begins. Talks are held on the orchestra level of the Eastman Theatre.
